Spiritual Conjunctivitis

Spiritual conjunctivitus

By Glenn Miller

GOD’S WORD: “Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in Your law.” – Psalm 119:18

My ophthalmologist (eye doctor) tells me that the perpetual redness in my eyes is due to them being sun-damaged for a prolonged period of time. It was when I was in the band in college and we would rehearse during marching season on an asphalt parking lot in the late afternoon facing directly into the sun. For four seasons, the sun took its toll on my eyes. Because of this, my eyes are more sensitive than normal and are more apt to contract air-born allergies and infections, like conjunctivitis.

Our spiritual eyes can have much the same thing happen to them. How often our spiritual eyes are infected with things of the world that can cloud our vision of God’s presence. When things get in my own spiritual eyes; things like pride, envy, selfishness, and self-justification, my focus on God is blurred and my eyes become so near-sighted that all I tend to see is myself. But as a believer, my heavenly ophthalmologist, a.k.a. the Holy Spirit, convicts me of my ailment and prescribes upon my heart the three daily drops that will clear my spiritual eyes:

  1. Worship / Praise to God for all that He has done.
  2. Study and seeking God’s will in all that I do.
  3. Doing, giving, or serving God by serving others…taking my sight off of me.

Open my eyes that I may see
Glimpses of truth Thou hast for me
Place in my hands the wonderful key
That shall unclasp and set me free.
Silently now I wait for Thee,
Ready my God, Thy will to see
Open my eyes, illumine me,
Spirit divine!

(Clara H. Scott, 1895)
