“YOU HAVE TO CATCH IT”
By GUIDO MINISTRIES
Benjamin Franklin was enthusiastically praising the newly drafted Constitution of the United States when a skeptic interrupted him. “It doesn’t mean anything,” the man protested loudly. “Where is the happiness it guarantees?” Franklin calmly replied, “Friend, the Constitution guarantees you the right to pursue happiness. You have to catch it!” The profound truth in his words reminds us that true happiness is not handed to us on a silver platter – it requires active pursuit.
Many people spend their lives chasing happiness in positions, possessions, or circumstances, only to find it elusive. A better job, more money, or ideal conditions promise joy, but they rarely deliver lasting fulfillment. For the Christian, however, happiness – often translated as “blessedness” in Scripture – is both a fleeting emotion and a deep, abiding state. It is not dependent on external happenings but rooted in the unchanging gift of God through Jesus Christ.
We catch God’s happiness when Jesus becomes our Savior and constant companion, when His truth shapes our thinking, His goodness directs our steps, and obedience to Him becomes our heartfelt aim. Jesus Himself declared, “Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.” He had just washed the disciples’ feet, modeled humble service, and called them to follow His example. True happiness – deep, lasting blessedness – comes not merely from hearing His words but from living them out in daily obedience.
